Winternationals 2012

It was a great day for drag racing!!

Jeff and I haven’t been to the drags in a long time.  We were excited to be going to the first race of the 2012 season.

We got to the raceway around 9:45am and headed in a little before the 11:00am start.  Since AAA is one of the major sponsors for the Winternational race, they have the John Force cars on display as soon as you walk in.

And the newest Force funny car, Courtney’s Traxxas car!

I love that the Winternationals are at the Pomona fairgrounds.  It’s always a little peek of what’s to come in September.

We headed straight to our seats when we walked in.  They were a bit wet, so we dried them off and waited for the races to start.

The Goodyear blimp was flying above for most of the race.

To start the races off, they sang the National Anthem and of course, the parachuter jumped out of his plane.

And then they were off!  Top Fuel was first and then Funny Car.  Robert Height’s car, unfortunately he lost in the first round.

Mike Neff’s car, who ended up winning and going all the way to the finals.

Courtney’s car, who achieved her first Funny Car round win!  She unfortunately was out during the second round.

And John Force’s car against the other female rookie, Alexis.  John got the win and made it all the way to the finals against his team member Mike Neff.

In between rounds, we either make our way back to the car or walk around in the pits.  We were able to snag an autograph from Ron Capps.

And a peek at John Force before he had to go back in to his trailer.

There were a few exciting moments; when Courtney made her debut and won her first round, when John Force came hoping out of his car, and one particular moment when everyone was holding their breath – when Jack Beckman’s car went right of the center line and into the other driver’s lane.  Their vehicles kissed but both made it out safe.

The final round went to John Force for funny car (how cute was it that he took up his granddaughter) and Spencer Massey (in yellow) for top fuel.

We had a great time and Jeff is now trying to convince me we should head up to Sonoma for the races in July.
